As a result of Client Evaluation and national and local research, the Family Learning Center has developed one of the most effective family-based computer literacy programs in the country. Thanks to a $250,000 Technology Challenge Grant from TANGO (a venture capital investment company), the Center has successfully run the "Family Literacy Technology" project for nearly three years. We have a state-of-the-art computer lab where students engage in rigorous training programs to learn Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher and Access), Microsoft Windows 98, Adobe Photoshop, web browsing and more. Intermediate students learn the fundamentals of web design, focusing on and mastering HTML. Advanced students learn computer programming through the language PYTHON.
Specific goals of the program include: (1) Close the digital divide that exists between affluent and poor populations; (2) Promote greater academic and technology achievements among minority children and adults; (3) Increase work skills for welfare recipients and those who are under-employed; (4) Increase opportunities for children and adults to broaden their world through successful manipulation of computers and the Internet communication systems.
