Dedicated service to our community since 1980

Our constituents are primarily residents of assisted-housing communities in the Boulder area (e.g. San Juan Del Centro, where our Center is located). For these residents, we endeavor to increase employment opportunities; to facilitate access to enhanced health and wellness; to provide quality daycare and preschool programs; to improve the educational performance of children of all ages; to promote economic self-reliance and self-sufficiency; to enhance parenting skills; and to break the bondage of prolonged cycles of poverty for individuals, trapped for generations in public and assisted housing. We do all of this in one central location.

The Family Learning Center began in June 1981 as a grassroots community organization that served 43 preschool children. It was co-founded by two concerned mothers residing in the San Juan Del Centro assisted-housing community. It has evolved into a full-service, one-stop, human service agency, serving approximately 2,000 individuals annually.

Current programs include: Early Childhood (Preschool and daycare), School age (After-School, Summer, Back-to-School Supply Drive), Adult Literacy (ESL, GED, Computer, Family Management classes) and Community Outreach (Collaborative Partnerships, Indirect Program Service Delivery, Community Meeting Place, Crises Referral Services, Clothing and Food Bank).

Accomplishments

Some of our accomplishments in the last year with respect to these programs follow:

  • 30 children successfully mastered pre-kindergarten readiness skills and made the transition into five Boulder Valley elementary schools.
  • 36 children, 3 to 4 years of age, successfully completed the mastering of basic preschool skills.
  • 148 school-age children (K-12) completed at least 360 hours of constructive after-school academic tutoring and participated in an ongoing variety of arts and recreational activities.
  • 90 children attended two summer recreational programs for 217 hours each.
  • 400 children received back-to-school supply kits.

This year, an evaluation completed by the National Research Center indicated that 71% of the low-income, minority children we served showed overall academic improvement (more than that of their middle-class and upper-middle-class peers). The same evaluation showed that 79% of our low-income, minority children had better school attendance. The Boulder Police Department attributed the dramatic reduction in crime in the San Juan Del Centro neighborhood to our summer youth recreational program. 80% of participating adults completed three levels of our computer class. 80% of the adults participating in the GED class successfully completed both pre- and post-GED tests. 80% of participating parents completed our 10-week parenting class. 100 parents and children completed 6, two-hour Parent and Child Time (PACT) learning-together sessions. 15 adult welfare recipients completed 1,200 hours of job internship and career training.
